Rich Blonski, our very own head of IT and Software Development, recently celebrated 10 glorious years with Points Group as its leader in all things computer. To honor the momentous occasion, I decided to place him in the spotlight to gain some insight into his very technical world.
Q. Tell the fine people of the internet: What is it you do at Points Group?
A. My work is basically divided into two sections: general IT and programming. General IT covers all the IT infrastructure for the whole company and its maintenance. This includes file storage, website hosting, email/calendar services as well as server setups, etc. Thankfully, with today’s cloud movement, a lot of these tasks are automated, requiring less work and involvement from me, which limits some unnecessary headaches. The programming part is more enjoyable; it challenges me with odd problems and forces me to focus on finding the right solutions.
Q. What inspired you to pursue what you do?
A. I’ve always been a techie, even when growing up. It wasn’t any particular idol that I followed or life experience that directed me toward technology, it’s just what I wanted and liked to do all along.
Q. What is the most challenging thing about your job?
A. It would be the constant change and making sure all components work together. With the ever-growing scientific field, IT is probably the most dynamic as it heavily relies on software rather than hardware. Unlike hardware, the software can be created or altered with just human will. It allows constant innovation and improvement but at the same time makes it hard for various components to understand each other.
Q. What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
A. The most rewarding thing is what’s most rewarding with any job: It’s the finish line of any project and seeing your hard work in action. The longer the project, the more effort put in, the better the rewarding feeling.
